Careers at Flapjack Johnnys Cooking.
A small, remote-first food team that hires slowly, pays fairly, and takes weekends off. Three roles are open right now.
How we work.
We are a small remote-first team based out of Tallahassee, Florida, with a shared test kitchen we use about two days a week and a quiet group chat the rest of the time. We hire one or two people a year, never more, because every new hire gets a real onboarding budget and a real seat in editorial decisions. Working hours are flexible, deep-focus blocks are protected, and we close fully for the last two weeks of December every year. If you write well, cook honestly, and like a team that takes its time, you will fit in.
Three roles open right now.
All three close on May 31, 2026, or when we find the right person. Apply by email -- no portals, no bots.
Recipe Developer
You will develop, test, and write up four to six new recipes a month for our growing library, working alongside our test kitchen lead. Each recipe goes through a four-cook test cycle in our Tallahassee kitchen or yours, and you will own the headnote, ingredient list, and method from first draft to publish.
We are looking for at least four years of professional cooking or recipe-development experience, the ability to write clean ingredient lists in both volume and weight, and a portfolio that includes recipes you have written for someone else. A regional specialty is a plus -- we are particularly short on Mexican, Indian, and Thai expertise on the team.
Apply by emailing careers@flapjackjohnnys.com with three sample recipes (links or attachments) and a paragraph on what you would cook for our July issue.
Customer Support Specialist
You will be the first reply for incoming email about memberships, store orders, and recipe questions. The role is twenty hours a week, set during our 9am to 6pm Eastern support window, with the option to expand to thirty hours after a successful first quarter. Most days are quiet, with bursts during a recipe launch or a holiday sale.
We are looking for someone who has done a year or more of email support for a small consumer brand, writes warmly and concisely, and is comfortable owning the support inbox without daily management. Bonus points if you cook at home regularly enough to know what a recipe question feels like from the other side.
Apply by emailing careers@flapjackjohnnys.com with a short writing sample (a real reply you sent to a customer is perfect) and your hourly rate.
Test Kitchen Photographer
You will photograph six to ten finished dishes a month in our Tallahassee test kitchen, plus the occasional product review still life. Sessions are typically Wednesdays and Thursdays. We provide the food, the surfaces, and the props; you bring the camera, the lenses, and a strong eye for warm, honest natural-light food photography.
We are looking for a portfolio with two or more years of editorial or commercial food work, a daylight-and-warm-tone aesthetic that matches the rest of the site, and the ability to hand off raw plus retouched files within forty-eight hours of a shoot. Remote applicants will be considered if you can travel to Tallahassee twice a month at our expense.
Apply by emailing careers@flapjackjohnnys.com with a portfolio link and your day rate.
